Dear Homo Sapiens, There is no need to continue reading this page. What follows is intended for search engine robots and spiders and not necessarily for human beings. Further information concerning luxury cruising in Turkey and Greece may be obtained by clicking on the blue links immediately above. Thank You. Are you a scholar of Buddhist iconography? Have you been directed to this web page because of the om symbol appearing on Shanti's head sail? Or could you be into meditation? You know, like in the yoga position. Or could you be here simply because the word shanti occurs so often in the text of this web page, your real interest being the repetitive mantra om shanti shanti shanti. If so, you must already know that om is the sound from which all other sounds are formed and has either no meaning or has a meaning encompassing totality. Or so they say. And you may also realize that shanti, from the Pali, a dead language of the Indian sub-continent, means peace or nirvana. If a scholar, Google may have done you a disservice sending you here. This web page deals not so much with nirvana as with a luxury yacht striving for nirvana Luxury Cruising Greeceby pampering guests and providing ample space for meditation. But that's about as close as she gets. The luxury yacht Shanti cruises the crossroads of history in the Aegean and eastern Mediterranean. In doing so she cruises the wakes of philosophers and of astronomers, of physicians and of mathematicians, of epic and lyric poets and of eminent sculptors, of apostles of war and of apostles of peace. Well, there we go! The luxury yacht Shanti cruises the wakes of apostles of shanti. Paul of Tarsus, now Mersin in eastern Turkey, was an apostle of shanti, though he was likely unfamiliar with the word itself, driving diseases and evil spirits from those to whom he ministered. So, too, was Timothy an apostle of shanti. A disciple from Lystra, now Turkey's Klistra near Konya, Timothy as well as Silas, and later, Luke, a physician of Antioch now Turkey's Antakya, accompanied Paul on his missionary journeys. Together the first three cruised the coast of modern Turkey and Greece beginning in AD 49, sailing from the Troad on a favorable wind across the northern Aegean to Philippi by way of Samothrace. This voyage was a part of Paul's Second Mission which as depicted above included an appearance on the steps of the Areopagus in Athens. Paul and Luke similarly journeyed by sea during the winter of AD 57-58, returning in the latter year from Philippi to Alexandria Troas (named for you-know-who's visit almost 400 years earlier) on the mainland of Anatolia near the island of Tenedos (Bozcaada). From there Paul walked and Luke sailed to Assos where Luxury Cruising Turkeythey both took ship for Mytilene on the island of Lesbos. Mytilene had six hundred-odd years earlier been home to the lyric poets Alcaeus and Sappho and had then been a more important center of Greek culture than Athens. That's Sappho at right in a depiction accompanying 1792's Sappho and Phaon by Mary Robinson, mistress of the Prince of Wales known as The English Sappho. Mytilene was again in Paul's time a more important center of Greek culture than Athens as the Athenian ruins depicted above suggest. From Lesbos Paul and his company sailed on to Chios, birthplace of the epic poet Homer and of the pre-classic sculptors Archermus and his sons Athenis and Bupalus, celebrated marble sculpting pioneers. From Chios it is but a short hop to Samos where Paul paused at the Pythagorion birthplace of the Sixth Century BCE philosopher and mathematician who developed the mathematical theory we've all forgotten: in a right triangle the square of the hypotenuse equals the sum... Pythagorion was also birthplace of the sculptor and architect Theodorus credited with design of the Temple of Hera a few miles distant and with developing the craft of casting bronze and iron for statues. From Pythagorion Paul sailed four miles south to Trogylium, now Port Saint Paul, an anchorage convenient to Miletus which in Paul's time was already a victim of Meander River silt. In the time of Sappho, however, Miletus was the premier center of Greek culture and learning, birthplace of the philosophers Thales, Anaximander, and Anaximenes among other notables including Aspasia, the known world's first liberated woman. From Port Saint Paul the apostle sailed to Kos, birthplace of Hippocrates, the father of medicine, and site of the Asclepeion hospital and school of medicine founded in his memory during the fourth century before the Christian Era. From Kos Paul sailed to Rhodes Town even then another center of Greek culture hosting Appolonius Moro's School of Rhetoric attended 133 years earlier by Julius Caesar. Still earlier Rhodes had been the residence of Hipparchus a native of Nicaea in Bithynia (now Iznik, Turkey). Hipparchus was the foremost astronomer of his time, perhaps of all time, inventing trigonometry and first to explain Luxury Cruising Turkeythe relationship of earth and moon. From Rhodes Paul sailed on to Patara which had 15 years earlier become the Roman capital of Lycia and which today is remarkable for its evidence of ancient history. (Itinerary from The Holy Bible, King James Version, Book of The Acts Of The Apostles, Chapters 16-20.) From Patara Paul jumped off to the Middle East and Roman imprisonment. Most of his second and third mission ports of call are on the modern track of the luxury yacht Shanti, and Shanti's crew is able to describe these missions in local detail. Thirteen hundred years earlier another prophet of peace graced these same shores. Her name was Cassandra, the Cassandra at left able to foretell the future but fated never to be believed. Having read this far, whatever your search purpose please do consider a luxury yacht cruising holiday in Turkey or Greece or both, including Cassandra's sea. The Aegean. Near Cassandra's home in the Troad. Yes, Cassandra, too, was a native of Anatolia, Priam's daughter, Priam of Troy. Cursed by Apollo never to be believed because she had refused his seduction, Cassandra's warnings to the Trojans about the Trojan horse and the fall of Troy as well as her own demise were not believed. She came to her violent end during the fall of Troy after the Trojans had admitted the horse, torn by the Greeks from a temple of Athena. It was this sacrilege which led Poseidon to call forth a fearful tempest which south of Crete destroyed much of the Greek fleet on its way home and brought about the Odyssey. The Odyssey, of course, is a product of Homer, the aforementioned epic poet from Chios. Early on in this epic poem, Odysseus is shipwrecked on the island of Ogygia, modern Lipsi, where he is said to have found seven years of shanti in the arms of Calypso. Lipsi, too, is a stop on routes of the luxury yacht Shanti cruising Turkey and Greece. It is no more than coincidence, but the Apostle Paul was also caught up in a tempest south of Crete while a prisoner en route to Rome, eventually becoming shipwrecked on the shore at Malta, all as described at www.shoretechnology.com/tgeweb/Itinerary4a.htm. The luxury yacht Shanti is not known to cruise south of Crete but in the event is much better founded than any vessel of antiquity. And, of course, the crew of Shanti is able to also show you the scenic wonders of this remarkable part of the world. Shanti, a most handsome luxury yacht cruising Turkey and Greece.
