Dear Homo Sapiens, There is no need to continue reading this page. What follows is intended for search engine robots and spiders and not necessarily for human beings. Further information concerning bare boat charter yachts sailing history's crossroads may be obtained by clicking on the blue links immediately above. Thank You. Could you be searching for a charter yacht odyssey under the sun at the crossroads of history? Something like that of Odysseus returning from Troy to his home at Ithaca? Including his seven-year holiday at the island of Ogygia, residence of the siren Calypso? Or like a more recent odyssey? It seems probable given the title of this web page. Probable or not, that's what you've got here, a French-built Sun Odyssey bare boat charter yacht sailing history's Aegean crossroads, including the wakes of Odysseus and many another of history's personalities. And including 20th Century French Navy tracks, as well. Troy may be found at the northwest corner of modern Turkey, just below the Hellespont now called the Dardanelles. Ogygia is modern Lipsi in Greece, about four comfortable days sailing to the south of Troy. Comfortable sailing means with time enough to explore Greek islands in between, islands such as Lesbos and Chios, Samos and Icaria, sampling barbounia, octopus, and mackerel at tavernas along the way. Or at ouzerias along the way. Pausing as well along the coast of Turkey, ancient Aeolis and Ionia and Caria, ducking into isolated coves surrounded by Calabrian pine to the water's edge, snaring an occasional sea bass. Or pausing to explore historically magnificent archaeological sites not just at Troy but at Pergamun and Ephesus and Miletus and elsewhere, as well. How about doing any or all of the aboveSun Odyssey Sailing Greece aboard a bare boat charter yacht with accommodations for eight guests. A bare boat charter yacht glowing with scrubbed teak, a bare boat charter yacht with a warm light-wood interior attractively appointed. Why not continue south from Ogygia, picking up the track of the French armored cruiser Dupleix pictured at left. Dupleix cruised these waters during the Great War. Named for an 18th century governor of French India, the 426-foot, 7700 ton, Dupleix slipped down the ways of its shipyard in Toulon in April of 1900. With a rated speed of 20 knots and mounting eight 6.5 inch guns as well as lighter ordnance and torpedo tubes, she saw pre-war service in the Atlantic and in Indo-Chinese waters. In 1915, however, she was assigned to the eastern Mediterranean squadron of Rear Admiral Émile Paul Aimable Guépratte, fortunately arriving two months too late to participate in the ill-fated Anglo-French attempt in March to break through the aforementioned Dardanelles. Upon arrival Dupleix was assigned to patrol the coast running south from the Dardanelles, harassing the Ottoman enemy wherever she might.Sailing
History's Crossroads That same month of May she appeared off Bodrum, and with one of her 6.5 inch shells took the measure of the minaret within the walls of Saint Peters Castle. Pictured at right, the minaret was soon re-erected. This Dupleix shelling was the second of only two assaults in the history of the former Hospitaller castle, the first following Mehmet The Conqueror's unsuccessful 1480 siege of Rhodes Town. His admiral and his son's future grand vizier Mesih Pasha paused on the way back to Constantinople to do even less damage to that formidable redoubt then defended by French knights among others. From Bodrum the Dupleix headed for a coaling station in the Cyclades, Syros, and thereafter joined the cruiser Jeanne d'Arc in the September 1915 annexation of Ile Rouad off the coast of Ottoman Syria, France's initial foothold in what became French Syria and French Lebanon. Three months later the Dupleix attended France's annexation of Kastellorizon opposite Ottoman Kas, the latter annexation harbinger of the French occupation of Adana in December 1918, and of Maras, Antep, and Urfa ten months later. Just what was it France hoped to achieve, anyway!!! French Turkey? Join us at the crossroads of history and find out. Would you be searching for Bodrum in Turkey? Could you be intrigued by St. Peters Castle? Called Petronium when the Hospitallers had it, and Halicarnassus when Herodotus there wrote the first history text, Bodrum is about 11 nautical miles NNE of Kos Town on the Greek island of Kos, both cities within 40 minutes of their own international airports. There or elsewhere we can put you aboard a bare boat sailing yacht for the holiday of a lifetime. We can put you aboard a bare boat charter yacht and show you Odysseus's track from Troy, show you Alexander's path down the coast of Turkey from the Hellespont, show you Cleopatra's route up the coast of Turkey and among Greek Aegean islands to Ephesus and Samos, and show you Dupleix's several late-colonial tracks.
